Write Your Way with Morgan Workshops

In supportive, nonjudgmental groups of no more than six writers (plus facilitator), I, an award-winning writer and teacher lead Creative Nonfiction writing workshops where participants work on memoirs-in-progress and essays over Zoom. Join my email list to be notified for the next round!

I focus on bringing out the best of each participant focusing on their writing style and plans for their work. The workshops are enthusiastic and encouraging.

Workshops are either 6- or 8-weeks long at $400 and $500. Sliding scale payments are available. Writers present their work 3 - 5 times depending on the number of participants and the length of the workshop. Each cohort meets once a week for two hours.

At the end of the workshop, an author visits the group. In the past, Deborah Lott, the writer of Don’t Go Crazy Without Me, and Lily Dancyger, the writer of Negative Space spoke with and answered questions from students.

TESTIMONIALS

I participated in two of Morgan’s workshops and I have done some of my best writing in them. Morgan has a keen eye for prose and the ability to gently critique and encourage at the same time. The workshop structure allows for a lot of valuable give and take within a small group of interesting, committed writers. Morgan manages the sessions well to make sure everyone gets ample feedback. I found the weeks in her classes were my most productive in recent years.

Morgan’s workshops have really elevated my writing. She creates an intimate and non-judgmental space that offers the perfect balance of creative freedom and concrete guidance. I left every workshop feeling inspired and with a better understanding of my strengths and areas of growth as a writer. Morgan is a supportive facilitator who understands the art of writing. Her feedback is spot on and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in multiple workshops. I even got a piece written for her published in a book. I am so grateful for Morgan’s expertise and recommend her workshops to anyone interested in becoming a better storyteller.

I first met Morgan while studying Creative Nonfiction at Emerson College, where she was a standout professor of mine. Eleven years later, I’ve found myself back in her company via Zoom, where she leads a nonfiction writing workshop. This is my second post-grad workshop with Morgan and it will not be my last. Her feedback is integral to my own journey writing a memoir; she is a thoughtful, supportive, and precise editor. If you get the chance to work with her, take it. You—and your writing—will be glad you did.

It has been a true delight and treasure to have Morgan Baker as a teacher, mentor and friend these past years. Non-fiction workshops (especially those that center on memoir and personal essay) can be a unique thing to write and give feedback for. Not only are we looking for direction on creating a solid piece of writing, we are confronting and making sense of our lives on the page. Morgan is an expert at oscillating between these delicate and important elements of nonfiction writing in her workshop classes. With her background in magazine writing, she offers no shortage of invaluable feedback on the mechanics of good writing. And on the other hand, Morgan has a wonderful talent for pushing her students to confront the truth in their pieces. Oftentimes in my workshops with her, when a piece is not quite working and coming together, she pushes me to explore the deeper reason why. Morgan has always helped me to be a more honest story teller, and in turn, a better nonfiction writer. I truly believe her workshops helped take my writing to the next level, helping my work to take that hard yet important leap between being enjoyable to read to a piece of art that resonates. Her classes have a helpful balance of discussing the works of other authors, doing free writing prompts, talking about where to publish one’s pieces, and traditional workshopping.

After taking Morgan's Creative Non-Fiction class at Emerson College, I've continued to look to her for support and advice. When she started hosting her own writing workshops joining was a no-brainer. She has helped me craft essays that I truly wouldn't trust with anyone else and shows immense compassion, and insight in all of her edits. Her support is never-ending, even when reading a draft of mine for the 7th time, she is just as enthusiastic as if it were the first read. No topic is too sensitive or taboo for Morgan's workshops, which is another thing I love about her. No matter the age of the group, or the balance of gender, we have thoughtful discussions that lead to excellent work from all writers. I've made great friends, finished pieces I'm proud of, and grown tremendously as a writer, editor, and person in these workshops. I cannot recommend them enough.
